“The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is writing to advise of a decision to cease the intake of animals to the Byford quarantine facility (Perth, Western Australia) until 31 May, 2013. This is due to the heightened and ongoing risk of bushfires in the surrounding area.
The extension to this measure has been put in place to ensure the safety of the animals and our staff during a time of heightened fire risk. Our main concern is for the health and welfare of the animals in our care.
This will affect all dogs and cats that are expected to arrive at the Byford quarantine facility until 31 May, 2013.
DAFF is contacting the owners of pets that we expect to arrive in Perth between now and May.
DAFF recognises that some animals will need to arrive in Perth over the next few days due to the immediacy of their travel plans, and on arrival they will be transferred to the Eastern Creek quarantine facility in Sydney. Pet importers with later arrivals will be encouraged to change their travel arrangements for arrival in either Sydney or Melbourne. Pet owners are asked to contact DAFF on +61 2 6272 4454 to see what they need to do.
I would greatly appreciate if you distribute this message to other relevant stakeholders.
If you require any further information please call DAFF on +61 2 6272 4454 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
